Contemporary Case Studies

Due to their lack of gears early pedal cycles had large wheels to provide speed. The driving wheel of the penny-farthing had a diameter of four to five feet (up to 1.5 m). But by the end of the nineteenth century, following the introduction of rear chain drive and the pneumatic tyre, the diameter of wheels had been standardized at between 26 and 28 inches (660 to 711 mm), a size that gave a comfortable ride on ordinary roads and fitted nicely into the adult diamond frame configuration. This standard design remained dominant during the first half of the twentieth century; innovations were mainly in lightweight materials and components for sports models and in reducing the manufacturing costs of utility bikes. The development of the Moulton small wheel bicycle triggered the next phase of cycle evolution.
